General IT support and admin

March 2003 – April 2009

Lead of IT support for Primary Care in NHS Lothian

In this post, I was in charge of Desktop Support for the 127 General Practices in Lothian.  The practices were operating paperlight / paperless systems for patient care, and hence relied heavily on IT support.

I led a team of 6 desktop support officers.  My responsibilities included leading the installation and maintenance of 110 servers, and leading the replacement and maintenance of 2,500 plus PCs.  New active directory was installed, with Server 2003, and GPass Clinical software.  I tested and implemented rollout of encryption of Backup software for the Practices.

During this time, the majority of practices moved away from using written patient records, to using only electronic records.  Since 2004, health promotion data and disease management data have all been recorded electronically, requiring very robust IT support, led by myself, to maintain the systems necessary for patient consultations.

During this time, I had very little sickness absence, and remained a reliable point of contact for Practice Managers.  In my own time, I worked on remote access to upgrading the practice systems – so that the practice systems didn’t have to be “down” during opening hours for upgrades.
